youngs lager yeast...
youngs lager yeast...
picked up a couple of these today [all they had in stock] to start my next lager with.
only the pack doesnt say what temperature range the yeast will work in. any body got any ideas?

Re: youngs lager yeast...
7 - 12 degC is quite often quoted for a true 'carlsbergensis' strain lager yeast. I'd try certainly not to let it get above 15C.
I've used the Young's stuff before - no real problems, but fermentation took MUCH longer than I'd expected (based on previous experience with beer using ale yeast) so be prepared for that.

cheers barm but...
the nice bloke at youngs said this morning 15 to 18 degrees.
can i just check that we are talking about the same yeast? mines in a little yellow sachet with black writing on it.
net weight 5g. says sprinkle on, wait 15mins and then stir in.does that sound the same as yours?

Re: youngs lager yeast...
Brysie yours is good for 15+ from what I can find out, it may still be alive at lower temps but I honestly can't even google a result!
Re: youngs lager yeast...
No doubt it will still happen at lower temps but obviously the time span will increase.
You see, even god hates a lager drinker

Re: youngs lager yeast...
I too would say that room temperature would be fine (15c-20c). I suspect that it's not a true lager yeast that needs fermenting at lower temperatures.
Re: youngs lager yeast...
think im gonna wing it kev.
going to pitch at 20 degrees and hope it kicks off as the temp drops overnight. fingers crossed mate.
hey parv..
it says `true bottom fermenting yeast` sounds painful `that produces desirable flavour characteristics
consistent with quality lager beer`
sounds good doesnt it.

Fair play Brysie, (what is your name?) I think thats best, I too doubt its proper lager yeast to be honest.brysie wrote:think im gonna wing it kev.

Re: youngs lager yeast...
morning all, its pi55ing down here.
now i set this one off last night, coopers lager with a kilo of dsm and 200g of caster sugar, and said yeast. boiled 10g of goldings for 15 mins and steeped a further 20g for 30 mins and then chucked that in through me sieve.
pitched at around 20 degrees and put down in me bunker. temperature overnight was around 10degrees down there but this morning the fv is still showing 18
and no real signs of life yet. did i put the yeast into too hot a wort and if i have whats likely to happen now?
