Burco boiler
Burco boiler
Trying to put ag kit together. Would an electric burco boiler 27litre be ok for 40 pint (~20 litres) just thinking of boil level. Does anyone have tip on where to buy a coolbox for my mash tun, seen one on http://www.charlesdirect.co.uk 32 litre at 13.99 but it's sold out.
Re: Burco boiler
Try and get a bigger Burco. You would be up to the brim with wort to boil down to 23 liters and would boil over for sure.
Re: Burco boiler
Thanks
Would i be just as well getting a Hop & Grape 10 Gallon bucket and asking it drilled for 2 kettle elements?
Is BPA leaching out of the plastic an issue http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandte ... astic.html ive a young baby and wife asked me the question as she was aware of the problem with baby bottles.
Making own would be cheaper, just to check, i could use same a vessel as HLT boiler and kettle couldnt ie, i just need intermediate barrel for the batch sparge fluid unitll ive finished with HLT.
Thanks

I'm sure BPA is only a problem with polycarbonate and PVC when they are exposed to hot liquid. These plastics are not used in the containers for brewing. Just check that they are; PET, HDPE, LDPE, and polypropylene and you shouldn't get breasts.
I use 3 FV's and a cooler box. FV1 has a single kettle element and is used as the HLT, FV2 has 2 kettle elements and is used as the kettle (I don't use the 2 elements at the same time but I had a scare when I thought my kettle of hopped wort had blown its only element a few weeks ago, so it's there for a back-up) FV3 is the FV and the cooler box is the Mash tun.
Towards the end of the sparge, I'll have the HLT with sparge liquor in, the cooler box with the mash in, the boiler with wort in, and the FV with all the post boil equipment in ready for sanitising.
In the event of my mash run-off hitting too low a gravity, I'll stop sparging and use the treated liquor for topping the kettle up during the boil.
You'll need at least 2 FV's. Have a look at Jim's setup in 'Technique' (top right of screen)
If you are going to cut the holes yourself, you can get a tank cutter that you tighten with a spanner, you'll just need a hole big enough for the bolt. I used a drill fitted rotary type tank cutter, but they are not as clean cutting.
There is a post with them on somewhere, I'll try and find it later.
Happy brewing

Re: Burco boiler
Our local ASDA are selling their 24 litre cool boxes for £7
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.
Re: Burco boiler
I have a 27L burco (It's a good few more litres than that but the max line is at 27) and it works fine as my boiler. Yes you do have to keep a close eye on it for the first few minutes until the foam subsides, but as long as you turn the dial down before it boils over then it's perfectly manageable.
Re: Burco boiler
I got myself one of those but there is no insulation in the lid, so I packed mine out with cardboard.Eric wrote:Our local ASDA are selling their 24 litre cool boxes for £7
