Question about quantities of yeast to use

Post by Wakmaggot » Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:58 pm

Hi,

Just a quick question, the answer to which is probably really obvious to the more experienced heads on these boards, but how much yeast is the correct amount for a first time brew using 3kg of liquid malt extract and a further 500g of spray malt? I love IPA and my plan is to have a bash at one for my first non-kit brew. I was going to use Safale US-05 yeast and I was wondering if just the one packet will be enough to ferment out what, to me, seems like a lot of extract? Ideally I'd like to get the strength up somewhere near where I always think an IPA should be at around the 6.5% ABV mark but I really, really want to avoid giving it an overly sweet taste which I know I won't enjoy.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! :)

if you're aiming for 23l of 1.060 wort you should really be using 2 packets. One packet is sufficient to ferment 23l of 1.050 wort anything above that gravity wise you'll need more yeast.

If in doubt check out the pitching rate calculator at Mr Malty
