Dextrose question

Post by mshergold » Wed Oct 14, 2009 6:34 pm

I'm hoping to brew a porter and have found several recipes I'm considering. One is American and lists dexrose as an ingredient. I don't have dextrose, but do have some beer kit enhancer which contains dextrose. If, for instance, the recipe called for 3 kilos of DME and 1 of dextrose, could I use 2 kilos of enhancer and drop the DME to 2 kilos? Or could/should I use something else?

I would be curious to see the American recipe that calls for dextrose. The homebrewing scene here in the States is usually so anti-anything but malt. Typically most people here wouldn't do anything with dextrose other than add a few ounces for bottle conditioning. My two cents..........

Thanks for your replies guys. I think you might be right 6470ozzy. I'd assumed it was American because the weights were in pounds and it says that dextrose is also called corn syrup. Having looked again the brand of LME the guy used in John Bull...

The recipe sounds pretty poor to be honest. What's the recipe and do you have a commercial beer in mind that you want to get close to ?

Thanks guys. I went for Richard G's porter recipe with 200g Bournville plain cocoa powder as suggested (I htink it may have been by you Mysterio) elsewhere on the forum.
