"Vorlaufing" recirculating wort till clear!
"Vorlaufing" recirculating wort till clear!
Vorlaufing wow what word, I’ve just read a thread which explains the process of taking first running and adding back to the mash tun and repeating this recirculating till the wort runs clear, I’ve a small 500ml jug which I use for this process about 3-4 times but get no change what so ever and come out a little cloudy. On all but one brew they drop bright in the FV and/or bottle, if I was to repeat this for X litres would this eventually run clear.

It's likely to be a bit cloudy. I think John Palmer describes what you're aiming for as looking like "unfiltered apple juice".
Essentially you are just aiming not to have bits of grain floating about in the wort.

If I use a "braid" during a batch sparge I'm not likely to get any visible-size bits of husk/grain coming through. When fly sparging through a false bottom with 2mm holes punched all over, after a few litres vorlaufing, bits of husk and grain will have settled in all the holes making a finer filter so small bits of husk stop coming out.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Great word! That was new on me too!
It's supposed to produce clear wort (with time and patience and lots of vorlaufing!!)
I've found that with my long length (not height) mash tun I get less filtration from the grain bed on batch sparge 1, so get some particles coming through early doors. 3 or 4 jug fulls dont clear it, but I've carried on anyway with the sparge. Next time I'm trying more jugfulls to see if that makes a difference.

The commercial brewery that I visit and brew with on occasion don't bother recirculating . .. they just use a sieve where the wort flows into the under back

Traps all the chunky bits and everything else is taken care of during the boil and fermentation.

Mines pretty crystal. I recirculate about 3-4 litres and I fly sparge really slow. (For no other reason other than I use a kettle to get my sparge water)

I'm not unduly worried about getting crystal clear wort from the tun, I'm of the same opinion as Aleman, as long as the big bits are filtered out a bit of fine particulate in the boil is ok.
