Anyone made a Hemp seed beer?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sun Nov 08, 2009 6:54 pm

I've spotted a couple of recipes online, one says to roast the seeds in the oven before mashing them, the other recipe says to use Malted Hemp Seed.

Is it possible to malt it? Does it just need to be wetted and kept warm for a few days until they start to sprout then dried off in the oven?
I assume it would need to be crushed as well?

I'm thinking of making a Pale all Goldings beer sometime soon-ish and just thought about a Hemp beer I'd had ages ago.

:) :)

Technically, germinating the seeds of any member of the cannabis genus requires a licence from the Home Office. Don't want to worry you, but wouldn't want you to risk 14 years in the nick either

Heath food shops and Seed sprouter makers should be told!!!

Well it's certainly an offence to cultivate hemp, so I suppose it depends on whether germination always = first stage in cultivation. After a quick Google search I haven't been able to find out.

I wouldn't really worry about it unless your germination efforts include lining your roof in lead and filling your attic with UV lights.
I guess a spell in the oven would be advised if you were going to treat it as if it was a barley.
Then it would be a question of trial and error as to how long for and whether you were after a hemp seed version of pale malt, roasted barley or something in between.

Place hemp seeds on a cookie sheet and roast in a 450 °F (232 °C) oven for 30 minutes.
The is the recipe I found for the Roasted Hemp seed, I'd just take the quantity from this and do the rest of the recipe myself.
I'll have to wait for my seed to turn up and experiment I suppose.

It's quite standard for fishermen to germinate hemp seed for groundbait. A few days in a bucket of water and those carp just love 'em.
I have to say that there is probably a reason why barley gets used for beer and hemp gets used for bird food and fish bait...

OK... here we go... :)

Raw hemp seeds:

Roasted hemp seeds 30 mins @ Gas mark 8, which made the house stink. They taste a bit like a lighter Pale Choc malt, maybe a bit Amber malt, quite biscuity:

Soaking the hemp seed in water, probably for 24 hours, then I'll drain it and leave it somewhere warm and dark to start sprouting:

I'm thinking the 30mins roasted seeds would be better in a stout, I made 250g of these so its not a bad amount to add to a 23L batch. I guess I'll have to crush these somehow, probably the pestle & mortar.

Now all I need to know is what temperature and how long to roast the sprouted seeds...?
I'll update this thread as I go. :)
