Peracetic Acid question

Post by bogmonster » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:55 am

Hi,

If I use peracetic acid correctly diluted and don't rinse how long do I need to leave the item before I can consume anything from it?

I understand that I should use the item straight away so if I have a cornie I have just sanitized I should just go ahead and fill her up. How long must I wait until the acid has decomposed and the beer is safe to drink? Would the concentration be so small as not to be an issue anyway?

I hear people keeping diluted peracetic acid for upto 5 days which implied that even in a diluted state it is still active for some time.

I don't worry about it, just fill and use, the amount remaining in a corny is very low, and then when you add 18L of beer on top

Great, I'll quit stressing over it :)

I probably ingest a certain amount of Peracetic acid every week at work, either in the sterile jug taster from the fermenter, or the sprayed mist when sterilising a fermenter or conditioning tank, then there's the stingy splashes in my eyes!!!

I'm fine!! Honest! ;)

It's nasty stuff when it's neat. I got a tiny amount on my fingers and it stung like buggery. Then the skin went white and mushy and after a while it fell off. I make sure I use latex gloves now and rinse everything that has been in contact with the neat stuff before touching it.
