Awesome high tech bit of kit

Post by Naich » Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:27 pm

I knocked this up the other day. You know when you get a bottle back from someone and they didn't rinse it out? There is half an inch of crud glued to the bottom. The bottle brush shifts most of it but there is always a crusty bit that just won't budge. Hit it with one of these:

It's a PTFE rod with a slot cut in the end and a piece of Scotch-Brite jammed in. It shifts dried on crap and that misty sheen of gunge that forms after the bottle has been used a few times, that the bottle brush seems unable to touch. It's marvellous.

Have you considered your target market?

For that reason, I am out.

Oh, I don't know, I could see myself in that target market, I've more bottles with glued-on crud than I have with beer in! What's the price? I'm in for three delivered...

Honestly, I tend to give instructions of how I want them washed, and the fact the beer costs less than the bottle.

I enjoy reactions of people who sample my beer (and the followers on a certain "friends with posts and pictures" type site).

BUT, I love making my beer and it takes a lot of time, MY time, dedication, sweat and effort, and I would hope my guinea pig buddies could do the decent thing and rinse them. (they do)

With no offense, this is purely my view, showing a disregard for my gear, to me shows a similar for my beer, I cant hack that, a few minutes with a little fairy and a shake and rinse after you've spent hours making it ...

Tell them to wash 'em properly next time !! LOL

None the less, if you have grubby urchins, thats the kit for you LOL.

Brew on, lee

I normally do a Bleech soak to remove that stubborn crud.

Well done on inventing the Bottom-Crud-Stick ;)

Over 2000 years ago the Roman soldiers used to carry some sponge on a stick to use as personal equipment to clean themselves up after a dump, so don't bother with the patent. . .
Nevertheless, nice effort, it's innovations like that that can save you some aggro and thanks for sharing it.

The easiest way to get dried on crud out of those hard to reach places in bottles is a cup of water and some gravel, good shake removes it all. Good old fashioned method that never lets you down.

Nice one Naich!

I have a lot of old bottles I have inherited from various people and some of them are truly disgusting inside. I was looking at them yesterday thinking I really should try to clean them so I shall knock up one of your crud-sticks and give it a go. (Royalty cheque in the post*)

Thanks guys. I am not in the military but I did once play Risk for 10 minutes before I got so bored I almost ate my own teeth.

You could probably make a crudstick out of a wooden spoon handle - saw a slit with a hacksaw and prise open the end to jam the Scotch-Brite in. It might need a few elastic bands to hold it in place because the wood will probably soften after it's been in the water for a while. I might also see if I can come up with a cunning way of making the scourer a bit less floppy.

If you use a long bit of scourer and attach the other end of the handle to a drill

I'll bet they didn't patent it though!

Risk is great! Especially on a Sunday afternoon in a pub with an understanding landlord or friends and homebrew.
