Can It Be

Post by Uncle Joshua » Wed Aug 03, 2011 8:56 pm

I started a Muntons Connoisseur's Yorkshire Bitter kit on Sunday, I noticed it hadn't started to ferment when I had a look on Tuesday, so I added some yeast vit and gave it a good stir, yesterday it was the same so I added a new batch of yeast and gave it another good stir. I just had another look and it still looked flat but there was a little skum around the FV (that may have been there on Tuesday) so I took the SG and its spot on 1010....could the beer have fermented out by Tuesday?

Ahhh.......This should have been in Kit Brewing. sorry. :(

It certainly could, I've had brews ferment out in just over 24 hours before.

A note here; try taking readings BEFORE expecting something to have gone wrong. You have just thrown money away by adding stuff that didn't need adding.
I buy from The Malt Miller

I did a Youngs harvest lager on Monday evening, I put 1.35kg Holland and Barret Malt extract in as fermentables and also steeped 450g caragold grains for 30mins to add more body and flavour. The og was about 1046. It was fermenting away vigorously the following morning and had finished at 1014 in 2 days! But temp has been very hot in my kitchen, 28c and whilst fermenting it was giving off definite pear odours. Now it has stopped fermenting it doesn't smell fruity and there is no pear flavour in the sample jar thank goodness. I guess summer temps have dramatic effects on fermentation.

I've recently had a Young's Brewbuddy Bitter kit completely ferment out in 48 hours and a Geordie Mild kit ferment out in 60 hours.

My latest was down to 1.010 in about 48 hours too. Just bottled it today. Other than being a little cloudier than normal, it seems ok (touch wood).
