I buy from The Malt Miller
There's Howard Hughes in blue suede shoes, smiling at the majorettes smoking Winston cigarettes. .

Blooming good hahaha
You could say I very hoppy!!
(IGMC)
Anyway I have to say that I have no secrets, training horizontally was a pain. I snapped loads of shoots off in doing so.
It really is a case of gently gently catchey monkey.
I did not think they would go that long, it's about 3m! Those ones will be easy to pick though!@

Waow, some amazing plants growing in peoples gardens out there!
I've only got one Cascade plant and it is in its first year, but really happy with the crop. Unfortunatly I know nothing about when is the best time to harvest and how I should dry them before pitching into my brew!?
Any pointers please

Re: Hop Growing 2011 time
Hi,
a quick update on my hops..
All the plants ( Hallertau, Mt Hood & First Gold) now have flowers or young cones
However the first gold has a pretty heavy infestation of aphids/green fly... Ive seen natural predators about but they cant be doing much to control the numbers... I dont want to spray now the flowers cones are here.. :S
Also the young cones dont have a great odour when rubbed
its a little cheesey..
I hope that improves...
any advice?
Cheers!

+1 to Bigvees. I'm a first timer too with 1 Cascade plant. Doing Ok in not ideal spot.Bigveees wrote:Waow, some amazing plants growing in peoples gardens out there!

When to pick?
There won't be many so I thought I could used cascades 'green' as post-boil addition to get the best from them.
Good / bad idea?

TIA

Re: Hop Growing 2011 time
Look for the very first signs of the cones turning brown, even if it's only just round the edges of the petals, this means they are ripe and good to pick. Or if you rub them between your fingers and you get a nice amount of sticky pollen.Bigveees wrote:Waow, some amazing plants growing in peoples gardens out there!

If you have somewhere warm and dry (airing cupboard or a conservatory) to put them, don't tightly pack them in a container as they need a need an airflow to dry properly. Ideally a bread tray with newspaper on the bottom. Leave them for a week or 2 checking how much moisture is lost by rubbing between your fingers and if the petals roll off easily they are dry enough to use. Or you can use them green.

Cheers for that I think I've found out about 3 days before I'll need to pick them.

Re: Hop Growing 2011 time
A better method to determine if they're fully dry is to weigh them. If they're the same weight after 24-48 hours, they should be dry enough for storage.scuppeteer wrote: Leave them for a week or 2 checking how much moisture is lost by rubbing between your fingers and if the petals roll off easily they are dry enough to use.
