britta filtered water

Post by paulpod » Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:22 am

So im thinking about using a britta filter on my water for my next brew.
I think our water is a bit dodgy at the best of time (my flat mate reckons it gives him the runs!)

Is this a good idea? i dont wanna strip the water of any minerals etc that might be needed

cheers

The brita water filter will strip your water of it's useful brewing minerals and replace them with Potassium.

Thats as technical as I get though, I'm sure someone will be along who understands the chemistry much better than me. I only know the above as my wife is diabetic, which in turn causes Kidney problems. She has to avoid potassium wherever possible hence we cannot use the Brita water filter built into the fridge.

I've used a brita filter since before I started brewing. I think it works fine. If your water is dodgy you should do something.
I'm just here for the beer.

Why do anything with your water?? your going to boil it over an hour so anything dodgy in the water will be killed.

As someone said Britta dont filter water at all just change the chemistry.

I've never heard that before. How does running water through a charcoal filter do that?
My brita filters out chlorine and makes the water taste pretty good.
