Don't think I like Cascade hops
Don't think I like Cascade hops
I've not really raved about any of the beers I have done with cascade. Made me wonder whether I just don't like its flavour. I have been using it with other hops. Is it best to blitz it late with Cascade on its own to get the best out of it?
Re: Don't think I like Cascade hops
Why not do up a small batch with just cascade, should settle it for you
Re: Don't think I like Cascade hops
It's very in your face and often overused, try it for light bittering with a small bit of aroma and it's pretty good.
Re: Don't think I like Cascade hops
thats it, I wonder if its only good when its in yer face? Used in moderation it doesn't seem to come through very well

Hmm, I don't like it when it's a hop bomb, I find it a bit fruity. I've had it used in some real ales and it was very tasty when used with English restraint rather than American gusto.
Possbly the opposite to the way you like it actually.

I love it. In fact I love NZ Cascade even more because it "turbo charges" the flavour.EoinMag wrote:greenxpaddy wrote:thats it, I wonder if its only good when its in yer face? Used in moderation it doesn't seem to come through very well

My thinking is along the lines of, "if you don't like it, or are disappointed with it, then use something else".
I have recently discovered that Willamette doesn't do it for me. Many have raved about it, but I won't bother to persist as there are so many other hops available.
Taste is a very personal thing. One man's meat.....etc, etc.....
I buy from The Malt Miller

I know I don't like Cascade hops, tried them at a really low rate once and that was to much for me, yuk.greenxpaddy wrote:I've not really raved about any of the beers I have done with cascade. Re: Don't think I like Cascade hops
Its very floral and perfume-like so IMHO doesn't work well as a general purpose hop. But I use quite a lot (though not in bomb-proportions) as flavouring/aroma hops in my summer APAs and I like it very much in that style - as do most people who've tried it. But its certainly no wall-flower, so if you don't like its character then probably no recipe/style will help very much.

I agree. A few months ago I had an excellent beer at a festival. I e-mailed the brewer to ask about the hops he used to find out he used centennial and cascades. It was a very well balanced beer.EoinMag wrote:It's very in your face and often overused, try it for light bittering with a small bit of aroma and it's pretty good.
I'm just here for the beer.
Re: Don't think I like Cascade hops
I've recently made a kit brew (Coopers Australian Pale Ale) with added Cascade, done three ways. Fantastic brew, comparable with Wharfebank Brewery's Tether Blonde or Leeds Brewery's Leeds Pale Ale. Slightly more floral than Saltaire Brewery's Cascade Pale Ale, but not quite as much as Badger's Golden Glory
It was my first experiment with adding hops to a kit so I'm well chuffed

Good for you John,
Hop additions to kits are an excellent way to start taking control of your brewing process. Dried packets of yeast can be bought for little money and make a difference as well. Welcome to the path.

The floral taste in Badgers Golden Glory is from the Elderflower not Cascade, but i love Golden Glory and Cascade, i have a bottle of Saltairejohn_drummer wrote:I've recently made a kit brew (Coopers Australian Pale Ale) with added Cascade, done three ways.
