Forgot 50 grams of 2nd Hop in Boil: Dry Hop Advice Please

Post by daveylaa » Mon Dec 05, 2011 9:25 pm

HI

Have looked up late hop additions on here. Have seen that you can add large amounts of hops to FV or when raking.

Major Hop omission on first BIAB brew on Saturday. Was making a 20L AG Lager from memory. Hallertau added 25g as stated

Should have added the Sazz Hops 45g 90 min + 10g @ flame out + 10g dry hop.

I ONLY ADDED 15g of Sazz for last 15 mins.

Now day 2 of fermentation. Going well for a 10 -15 c Brewferm larger yeast.

Question: Should I now add a 40gram steralized bag of frozen Sazz in Primary fermenter (muslin bag)

Or dry hop later. i.e. After 1st fermentation died down.

Won't do this again .....

Yours Sincerely =D> =D>

Hi Daveylaa

If you dry hop during the primary active ferment the best part of the aroma will be driven off by the co2 from the ferment. I've only dry hopped once and added them once things had settled down. It worked rather well and it's something I'll be doing again :D

Thanks Tom

Yes I did read that tonight also, but forgot to post that bit.

It was stated a couple of times, so is probably the right thing to do!

Cheers

Hi,
the 90min hops are for bittering and need to boil for quite some time to extract the bitterness oils, so that won't be replaced by hopping at a late stage. However the 15min you added will have got the flavour component, so a bit of dry hopping will also add the aroma; I mostly dry hop in the primary (and in my case only) fermenter but yes, wait until after the main fermentation has died down.

EDIT: beaten to it :-)

Cheers

Thanks Kev

Hope the aroma effect will take away some of the sweetness of 4.5kg or lager grain!

Cheers Dave
