Wort dilution?

Post by Monkeybrew » Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:28 am

Does diluting the wort in the FV to the correct brewlength and OG have any negative affects on the final brew?
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:
AG#44 - Harvest ESB - 5.4%
AG#45 - Amarillo Gold APA - 5.2%

I always used to dilute my wort when I was extract brewing as my boiler wasn't big enough.

I believe it is quite common practice, even in use by some of the larger breweries, so I can't see it could do any harm.

Cool, thanks for that.

I would like to stretch my brewlength to 10L for BIAB #2

Hi Monkeybrew
May I suggest that you head over to BIABrewer.info site and download the Maxi Biab spreadsheet/calculator (It's under the BIAB Brewing Methods, Equipment, Recipes & Research, BIAB Variations section). You will have to jump through a couple of hoops to get registered but it's worth it. The Maxi Biab calculator makes provision for dilution, increased hops and grain usage, etc. I've regularly brewed 12-18 liter batches in my 15 liter stockpot.

Pretty much all of my BIABs were diluted post-boil in the fermenter (23l brews in a 20l pan) and worked out fine. Don't forget to treat your dilution water with campden tablets to drive off the chlorine/chloramines though.

I got myself some Campden tablets yesterday and treated 15L of water in a sterilised FV overnight with about 1/3 of a crushed tablet :)

Cheers for the info, I did download a spreadsheet from BIABrewer last week, but don't think that it was the Maxi one.

I will take a look and have a play around with it.

All mine are brewed to 15 litres then topped up to 23-25 litres.

If nothing else it aids cooling :D

I have to dilute, my stock pot holds 15l which is down to approx 10l by the end of the boil. This is then cooled and i start taking hydrometer readings and adding water until i get to the starting gravity that i want, usually by this time the temp is down to about 21- 22c so i can then pitch. this usually gets me about 19-20l of beer at this stage.
