CBA Club Only Competition March 2012 - Bitters- Results

Post by alikocho » Thu Mar 22, 2012 3:12 pm

The results of the Club Only Competition for Bitters are out!

1st - Bristol Craft Brewers (James Sutton)
2nd - London Amateur Brewers (Peter Hughes)
3rd - Shed Brewers of East Anglia (Ron Ashworth)
4th - Oxford Brewers (Stuart Palmer)
5th - Scottish Craft Brewers (Stuart McLuckie)

This means that points are awarded as follows:
Bristol Craft Brewers - 12 pts
London Amateur Brewers - 8 pts
Shed Brewers - 4 pts

The competition was close, but it was noted that brewers may like top pay closer attention to the style guidelines when entering beers. Feedback will be sent out to brewers. The flight summary sheet will be made availble so that the range of judging scores can be seen.

Congratulations to those who placed.

Next Club Only Competition is Wheat Beers (Categories 6D, 15A, 15B, 15C) to be judged by London Amateur Brewers in June 2012.

No Northern either...
I tend to find that my own ideas for beer outweigh thoughts of competition, hence I have a full brew-calendar which is governed by my rate of drinking.
Nothing I entered last year in the National was brewed for it, beers I had were just fit in the styles where they seemed best :) I'm hoping to have a better approach this year.

Yeah it's not great but, on a positive note, at least you know whether or not you entered the competition... :D

(Soz, CEB. It was an irresistibly easy target hehe)

Ali, on the styles, is there intention to specifically exclude 16A (Wit) or is than an omission? (and for that matter, in the rather less likely instance, 17A and 17D - Berliner Weiss and Lambic)?

That's generally the best approach - you should do this after brewing each beer in case you're sufficiently off the mark that it sits better elsewhere. And remember Class 23 (or 16E for Belgians) for anything that doesn't fit anywhere else.

It is quite deliberately set out as it is. If one introduces Wits, berliner Weiss and anything that *could* contain wheat then it makes it much harder to construct a flight of beers that stand up well in comparison to one another. Really this set of categories refelcts the German style Wheat Beers, but also allows for the American take on it.

Indeed, but be careful not to use it as a dumping ground for things that really should go elsewhere.
