Using Holland & Barrat malts?

Post by winka » Sat Apr 28, 2012 3:14 pm

I hear of people using the jars of malt extracts from holland and barrat. Is it cheaper than buying the malts from the homebrew shops? and do you just do the same, 1kg for 1kg or is there any difference in weights.

Im trying do do my next brew for as little little as possible, but without using 1kg of sugar

cheers for any advice

I use both DME and the H&B malt extract. I tend to use the H7B in the lighter brews, but not exclusively. Because the H&B malt extract is in liquid form I substitute 3 jars for a kilo of dried malt extract . That equates to 1.452 kg of H&B malt extract. However, I will often use 2 jars and around 250-300g of brewing sugar (dextrose) when making a bitter kit.

Does it work out cheaper? Well, if you can buy the H&B when 'the buy one get one half price' offer is on you pay just under £3.00 for two jars. That's a lot cheaper than buying the dried malt extract. Also, there is a H&B in almost every high street.

How much is in a jar?

I might try my next with like you say, 2 jars and 300g of brewers sugar, or maybe even normal sugar.

If I got a 1kg bag of brewing sugar and used the 250g how would I store the rest, just keep it in the bag.

Cheers

454g in a jar. I used 2 jars with a coopers real ale kit. I also steeped some pale malt, crystal malt and torrified whet plus some Saab hop pellets and I am well pleased with the result. :)

Noticed on the TV tonight - H&B are doing a "Buy 1, get the second for 1p" deal - could work out nicely for malt buyers :)

I popped over our local retail park last night, there's a h&b outlet. They do different deals to the high street ones, but they have buy 1 get 1 half price, but out of stock. Only had potters herbal malt, and it was about 3.99 a jar.

Wonder if all the local brewers have bought all the normal stuff :D

I keep the remaining sugar sealed in the bag with a plastic kitchen clip. Otherwise pour it into a clean airtight jar or even a knotted polythene bag.

How do you add the jars. Just straight into fermentor or do you need to boil them first.

I mix with boiling water - stir and mix with the rest of the kit. Works for me

cheers mate, how much boiling water, just a cup or so?

I was just thinking more about any nasties in it that needed to be boiled out.

Cheers

Here's a link http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... =477&sid=0. Just make sure that you do not buy the one with cod liver oil in it.

Cheers lads. They were the ones I seen but wasn't sure.

I guessed about the cod liver oil mind ;-)

Would marmite/Vegemite work. B&M bargains were selling tubs of Vegemite recently for 49p a jar.

Edit. Marmite is yeast extract not malt. So answer is probably no
