Earthy English Hops

Post by BeerEagle » Fri Jul 20, 2012 4:45 pm

Was brewing today, going for a big hit of 200 grammes of an experimental variety, late and post boil.

Had about 35 grammes of Northdown which I planned to use for bittering.

Luckily I broke down the cake of the Northdown before adding it as I found a gert big lump of dried soil in the middle of it.

That would have fecked up my clarity, big time, I suspect.

I can say only for T-90 pellets, but last year's was utter crap, both Challenger, Goldings and Fuggle. Soil, wood fragments, other kinds of rubbish.

Critch will tell you, that's not unusual with UK hops
I buy from The Malt Miller

Blobs of black shit are generally bits of grease, hop resin and general crap picked up from the picking machines.
Had a foot length of bine in the Bobek at work the other day. So it's not just the English ones. ;-)

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Pity there were no worms in the Earth, they add a great flavour

but it mainly is.....

it really depends which farm theyre from, eg farams own gear ive NEVER had a problem with

i opened a pack of fuggles last week and found a 6 inch snapped off knife blade embedded in the middle, thats a new one.

goes well with the copper pipe, half bricks, nylon rope, a mug(!) nuts and bolts and a bloody spark plug that ive found in 5kg bales before

as you said though your always gonna get bits of mud and twine in em........
