HELP! keep it in the polypin or bottle it?

Post by Mellenchip » Tue Oct 23, 2012 6:32 pm

hello all, a few weeks ago i started a Geordie winter warmer kit. as i had read a lot about using poly-pins for conditioning and dispense i decided to give it a go.
As i was going on holiday i decided to leave it in the FV longer so i didn't risk it blowing up whilst i was away! in the end it was in there for 4 weeks.I then put it into the poly-pin with 60g of molasses sugar. i left if for a week and let off a bit of gas, it then stopped doing much at all and tasted flat and sweet. i've since added a 6g pack of yeast i had from a wherry kit and its started fermenting again. my question is should i leave it in the poly-pin or bottle it? I'm really not sure about the pin as i dont want flat beer!

i understand i've messed it all around a lot but wondered if you lot had any thoughts. i'm leaning towards the bottles at the moment. oh also the poly-pin i've used is a 20l water carrier from Millets i got for £5

thanks in advance. Matt, London

If you have added yeast to the pin and its started to ferment then bottling would cause your bottles to explode maybe. I would leave it alone and if the pressure in the pin gets too high draw a pint or two off to lower the pressure

The safest thing is to bottle. They're much stronger than poly pins and if you close them properly, the tops will keep the beer carbonated. Obviously, there is the practical faff of bottling to overcome. But it sounds like you'll be bottling something similar to krausening beer, so you shouldn't need to reprime and it might even be ready to drink in just over a week.

Edit: forgot to mention - the caveat to my suggestion is if the SG is too high then you shouldn't bottle because you'll get breakages!
