BIAB 5~ Abbot Ale Clone by Dev

Post by paz1 » Thu Dec 20, 2012 10:14 pm

Got the time off work now until after new years' and at SWIMBO is at work tomorrow, I thought I'd get a brew on.

I have gone for the Abbot Ale Clone by Dev, as I do enjoy a pint or 2or... of it.
Recipe is as follows:
Pale Malt- 3.8kg
Crystal Malt- 100g
Flaked maize- 250g
Choclate Malt- 41g
White sugar- 400g
Goldings- 25g at boil
Northern Brewer- 23g at boil
Goildings- 20g finnish of boil
S04 yeast.

I have decided that this will be my 1st night/ day brew, where by I am mashing now (night) and will do the boil 1st thing tomorrow morning (hopefully, providing me with the time to do the 6th BIAB :-D ).

Generally when I mash overnight I start the mash off a couple of degrees higher than I normally would. Supposed to counteract getting a dry beer by mashing too long. Not sure if it does that anyway, but the end result is pretty well balanced.

Thanks for the Steve, I'll do that in the morning.

90 min mash is just over so I'm going to wrap it up as much as I can get get back to it in the morning.

Just finished everthing including cleaning up. I didn't get 2 BIABs done today, but had a kit in the garage, so got that into a FV too.
All looks good, but time will tell how good. Only one problem during the brew day; and that was I ran out of gas in the 1st tank half way through and it must have been 10 mins before i realised, and by the time I changed it over and got it back on the boil i wasted about 20 mins, but thats minor.

The over night mash was a good experiance, as it does break the brew day into 2 smaller sessions. I think (depending on the beer's end product) I will use this method again.
I have one question about over night mash if someone can help with please? Is it ok to mash out at night and then just start with the boil the following morning, or does it need to be carried out in the morning?
