10 sacks of malt, anyone want to share? Yorkshire.
Re: 10 sacks of malt, anyone want to share? Yorkshire.
VAT. If they should charge it, then they would.
It's the LAW.
I own a VAT registered business and if something is VAT exempt, then they don't have to charge for it, and you as a retailer shouldn't either.
So, how do the maltings sell without charging VAT. Are they Illegal? I think NOT. It's obviously classed as a food product which is not chargeable for VAT.
Sorry mr Home Brew Shop. If you have to charge the VAT, but can't claim it, you can't blame us for trying to save a few bob.
Regards
Vincent.

Feel free to read this

Which products are standard-rated?
Standard rating applies to:
kits for home brewing, wine making etc;
retail packs of hopped malt extract, malted barley, roasted barley, hops, special wine and brewer’s yeasts, wine or beer concentrates and similar products specialised to home-brewing or wine making; and
retail packs of foods which are not specialised to home-brewing or wine-making, such as fresh, dried or tinned fruit and fruit juices, barley, glucose and plain malt extract, if they are held out for sale (ie packaged and labelled) for home brewing or wine making.
Non-food materials used in home brewing and wine making, such as finings, isinglass, equipment etc are standard-rated under the general VAT provisions rather than those of excepted item 7, since they are not food within Group 1
****
As you see the last part
***************
Food and food ingredients used in commercial brewing
Excepted item 7
only applies to food or food ingredients prepared and packaged for home brewing and home wine making. The same materials, (malt, hops, hop extract, barley etc), not prepared in this way and supplied to the commercial brewing industry, are therefore zero- rated, even though they will be incorporated into a food which is itself excluded from zero- rating (beer being standard-rated by virtue of excepted item 3 to group 1).
********************
We have to add it to the goods and pay the HMRC the VAT when its due, there is not getting around this
If we sell normal sugar in the shop Tesco's = Zero VAT but as we a Home brew shop We have to pass on the VAT this is the same from fruit used for home brewing
Please we been in business 43 years, we know what the law is and what we have to pay vat on
The only items that are Zero vat is the BOOKS

Re: 10 sacks of malt, anyone want to share? Yorkshire.
Always makes me laugh too. When I read HBS's moaning about us home brewers not wanting to over pay for our grain and hops.
A few years ago I payed £3 Kg for pale malt and £6 for 100g hops in my local HBS.
I decided I would try to never pay that again. I haven’t.
I say shop around.

Deal is done, collecting the malt in the morning, I have the invoice and I have the cash.
If successful and all goes well, I may do it again in a few months.

No Worries Simon. Nice to meet you too. I will let you know if we go for more... so far so good. Just waiting for two collectors and that will be the lot gone, thanks for the forum Jim.
I did post this on another brewing forum and it was removed by the admins. Mizerable gits, I guess I'll only be using this forum from now on
