It could be Nottingham, but based on the description I suspected Whitbread-B/Whitbread-dry. The number 07 could be another clue, since WLP007 is White Lab's version of this popular and historic strain.super_simian wrote:I am going to be stoked if these are truly new yeasts. And I'm not usually a nay-sayer, BUT some of the descriptions sound...familiar. For example; M07 (British Ale): med-high attenuation, high flocculation, high compaction, can ferment as low as 12C? Sounds very much like Nottingham. Although they do say it accentuates hop and malt...
You guys are probably right, but I was hoping at least Burton Union Yeast M79 and Newcastle Dark Ale Yeast M03 were strains we hadn't seen in dry format before. I still don't know.AnthonyUK wrote:I wouldn't have thought so but just known strains in dried format.

Based on the description of the fermentation on a couple of forums of the Burton strain I'm guessing it's something new in dried format - and have got myself a few sachets to road test and now I have a fermentation fridge I have high hopes for this. (once I transfer the brew thats sat in there at the moment)
If anyone gets a brew on before me I'd appreciate an update.
Cheers

I really hope it is a dry form of WLP007; that's one of my favourite yeasts. I don't think 007 ferments down to 12c though, does it? Can't say I've ever taken it below 17c myself...seymour wrote:It could be Nottingham, but based on the description I suspected Whitbread-B/Whitbread-dry. That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I've used S-04, which is another form of Whitbread-B, down to 15.5°C at which point it was still extremely vigorous. So I suspect it would continue fermenting, albeit probably more sluggishly, several degrees cooler. I have heard the strain can be used "low and slow" to closely approximate true lagers. There's also the issue of how the company chooses to "spin" statistics. Wyeast and White Lab both seem to publish fairly narrow "ideal fermentation" temperature ranges, but we've all successfully used those strains higher and lower than "ideals." It's not like the yeast hits a brick wall and simply goes dormant or something; it's more like the speed, efficiency, or resulting flavors are less predictable outside those figures...Befuddler wrote:I really hope it is a dry form of WLP007; that's one of my favourite yeasts. There's some speculation that this is a dry version of Wyeast 1272.However, Siebel has a different strain BRY-97 "American West Coast Yeast", with higher flocculation. It's fairly obvious to me this must be the origin of Lallemand/Danstar's recent BRT-97 "American West Coast". Perhaps Mangrove Jack M44 "US West Coast Yeast" is another rerelease of this Siebel strain, not Chico.
These yeasts are available at my LHBS at $5; most other dry yeast they carry are less: S-05 for $4. I'd like to try some, but I'd rather not spend $1 to $1.50 more on yeasts that are just versions of already available strains, although if the 97 is a dry version of 1272 I'll give it a go.
I'm just here for the beer.

I think these are in my LHBS. I'll report back next visit.
Re: Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Dried Yeasts info
You can get these from my local HBS homebrewcentergy.com
I used one in a wheat beer but yet to taste it but it was the biggest spew I have ever had.

I did an IPA on Saturday with the M44, will report back.

Bought Mangrove Jack Bavarian yeast Morley home brew shop and it's made one of the best wheat beers I've made! Just like the real thing!
Re: Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Dried Yeasts info
Anyone had trouble with fermentation with the Mangrove British Ale yeast?
I brewed on Saturday, rehydrated & pitched about 2pm. It took till about 6pm Sunday to kick off and had all but died off again by Tuesday. No real high krausen to speak of.

I haven't used it but have you taken gravity readings? Lack of krausen doesn't always mean it hasn't fermented.
Re: Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Dried Yeasts info
Mine went crazy and was really good. Will be using it again.
Re: Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Dried Yeasts info
I brewed a strong English bitter with the British ale strain! Fermented fine and quick then dropped like a rock!
Re: Mangrove Jack's Craft Series Dried Yeasts info
I used the Newcastle strain in a 1048 porter and it stopped dead at 1020, pitched US05 to get it down to 1012.
