Would a BIAB Porter work? I read that beers with flaked wheat aren't best with this method.
Plus do i have to mash with full liquid, can i just use half then take the bag out and sparge from there to the desired level?
BIAB Porter
Re: BIAB Porter
You could certainly brew a porter using the BIAB method. I don't see how flaked wheat would be a problem and certainly not in the amounts for a porter...
...maybe someone thought you might get a stuck mash..?
If that was the theory then I think its a load of baloney as the high water to grain ratio in a typical BIAB mash means it is really difficult to get a stuck mash plus you are just pulling the bag at the end and can help it drain by moving the grain around if you need to.
I have seen 100% wheat beers brewed using BIAB with no added husks...
You don't have to use the full volume in the mash with BIAB. You can take whatever approach best suits you or the brew you might be doing at the time. For example when I do a BIAB I usually keep back about 5l to do a simple sparge.
Go for it and good luck with the Brew!

I've done one. It's fine.

Re: BIAB Porter
and our bass player has just ordered another batch... that's no 4 for him I think, not forgetting the Celebration Ale batch I shared with him and the two or three batches of CaraGold his missus has commissioned.
