Guess the hop variety

Post by snakepie@hotmail.com » Thu Sep 12, 2013 10:02 pm

Hello,

So I bought 4 varieties of hops a year ago and got a harvest off one of them.
I bought:

Goldings,
Perle
Cascade
Newport

I harvested it 7th September (to give you a time of when it matured). It tasted qute bitter and no sign of grapefruit smell or taste (which rules out goldings or cascade). It had a strong hop aroma so not sure out of perle or newport. WHat do you think from the pics below:

I'm not sure you can rule-out Goldings. They aren't very grapefruity, and assuming you live in England, it makes sense they would be the most prolific under your growing conditions.

Here's a decent resource: USA Hops Variety Manual. Obviously, it's a US, not UK, guide but there is a picture of a cone next to most descriptions. This is probably a horrible way to judge which you have since they're all so similar, but based on that alone, yours look a lot like Perle to me. Please don't put much weight on that, though.

A stupid question: is that just one of your four plants growing there, or are all four tangled into each other (in which case your harvest is likely a grab-bag of all four)? It seems strange to me you would get such a bumper crop from one plant and nothing from the other three?

Hi Seymour,

Im quite sure they aren't goldings as they are far too bitter when I made a hop tea to really make sure they are these.

I thought they were Perle as they were very bitter and fragrant. Newport wouldn't be fragrant would they?

No there is 3 plants, but I made sure they didn't intertwine so the middle mass of leaves is the flowering one. Others haven't flowered as planted at different times. :S

Cheers and let me know what you think with this in mind :)

There's a strong possibility they're Perle then. Newport would also be fragrant (pretty much any humulus plant with lupulin glands will be, and in fact, Newport hops are even higher in overall alpha acids and oil content) but Perle would have a smoother, more pleasant aroma compared to Newport. You could always purchase some of each to compare to your own.
