Youngs Lager Yeast come in 5g sachets - they say 1 sachet is enough for 23L? Should I trust them, or should I chuck in 2 or 3 packets?

Hi Gaz

Do yourself a favor and chuck it in the bin. Young’s Lager Yeast is Sh!!t.
Get decent Yeast, something like Safelager W34/70.
I used the Young’s one a few years back, its bloody horrible stuff. The W34 is lovely.

I was a bit dubious, as they only cost 99p each. Maybe the bin is they way to go for them!

I brewed a lager 2 1/2 weeks ago using 34/70 for the first time. It was a three gallon batch at 1.050. I sprinkled it on, like the package said, at 3 pm. At 7 am I had a third inch of foam and a burp in the airlock every 16 seconds. After 16 days, 7 at 50f and 9 at 48f it was down to 1.009 and tasted pretty good. It's at room temperature now and I am going to rack it to a smaller carboy in the next couple of days and lager it below 40f for several weeks.
I'm just here for the beer.

Or, you could toss it in the boil and use it to feed the 34/70.

Just a liitle thread resurrection for my own (and others) research purposes :)

I've discovered that the anonymous "Youngs Lager Yeast" is in fact repackaged Mauribrew L497 ( http://www.gwkent.com/media/pdf/product ... er_497.pdf ) - the pitching rate should be 1-2 packets in a 25l ferment - at lager ferment temps, I cant see the overpitch being an issue :)

As I have 4-5 packets, I'll be trying a lager brew soon with it - wish me luck

I am having a senior moment here but I seem to remember there is one quite popular and respected dry yeast strain (not Youngs) that is referred to as the old mauri strain. Was it S-33?

Sorry, S33 was EDME.

That would be the old "Edme" strain , S-33 a yeast that I always have on hand.

Another lager strain from Fermentis is S-23, of German origin too. Never had good results with them, perhaps they need special fermentation regime.
