Cleaning a boiler

Post by gibbiem » Fri Feb 21, 2014 1:09 pm

Time to clean up after my first AG brew. I'm using a 32l boiler with tap from Rob at the Malt Miller. It's got a copper hop strainer. What's the best way to clean it? I've given it a good clean with soapy water and scrubbing brush and now just boiling some clean water and letting it through the tap. Don't really want to strip it down. Any advice? Cheers

Is this your boiler? If you don't want to disassemble the hop filter then you can always back flush it through the tap. You could also give it a soak with some percarbonate cleaner too. I shouldn't worry too much as its been boiled though, still its nice to get all of the bits out.

That's the one yeah. Yeah I thought about back flushing it. Just stick the hose pipe in and blast it? When I ran boiled clean water through the tap it flushed out some gunk then ran clear

I just wash mine out with fairy liquid and give it a good scrub. I then just open the tap and drain it out through the tap, then give it a rinse.

I dry it out afterwards.

I boil water in the boiler just before a brew day which gives it a freshen up, I then use that boiliing water for flushing through the plate chiller and all the pipe work and pumps in the brewery, then it all goes into the Mash Tun to pre heat that.

I dont use any detergent - i scoop out the spent hops, then rinse out with a hose in the garden. then use a oxy cleaner (diluted - with gloves) with a dish cloth. then rinse well with hose & spray with starsan .

Why do you need to spray your boiler with starsan. It doesn't need sanitising.

Eh !!!!!!!!!! It really doesnt matter as its getting a 1 hour + boil. Me, I just tip the dregs, rinse out then scrub the element and any stains clean with a bit of washing up liquid and plastic scourer, rinse and leave for the next brew. Ive even tipped a dead mouse out once when ive left it in the shed !!!!!

Just to prevent anything growing - as all my kit sits in the shed for a while between brews , so the theory is if everything is sanatised there is less mould/bacteria to clean off next brew day ! (as you know mould loves cold & damp & dark)
