Growing hops

Post by daddies-beer-factory » Fri May 09, 2014 8:18 pm

Hi there,
I planted 2 hop plants in Jan 2013 - 1st year no hop flowers as expected.

what I want to know is, each root has seemingly split into 2 clusters - & I have 2 twines/ropes for each plant to climb, so should I cut everything back and just allow 1 climber from each cluster = ( 2 per plant) ?

i hope this makes sense

It does depend on the variety, some grow better with only 4 bines per plant with others it doesn't make too much difference. It is always worth putting up 2 or 3 bines per string (not per plant), just in case one gets accidentally cut.

If you are able to post a pic or 2 it would be easier to decide which to cut back and which to not. ;)

Thanks Dave,
one of the plants is in the sun & we went away in april & it went mad & climbed up a trellis - but unfortunately i had to cut most back to the root.

I will take your advice & let 2 bines grow up each string.

thanks ( will try & add a photo )
