Storing 2 Gallon in a 5 Gallon Pressure Barrel

Post by TonyT40 » Sat Jun 14, 2014 12:51 pm

Hi

I have just completed a 2 gallon extract brew. Bit short on bottles at the moment so i was going to put it in my pressure barrel. Problem is there is going to be a lot of head space which will prevent the beer from carbonating properly. If I put a CO2 bulb on the barrel, purge the air out and fill the head space and pressurise with CO2 will it preserve the beer and allow me to carbonate with sugar?

Thanks for your thoughts

Tony

Ive not don this myself, but I cant see why you cant purge it, fill with CO2 then prime.

The extra headspace means you need to produce more CO2 before it reachers the pressure needed to be absorbed into the beer. If you treat it like you would any other brew in a pressure barrel, but take into account you will need more CO2, whether from bulbs or priming, I dont think you will have any problems.

Yes that's fine. But... As Caz has said. A bit of a waste of gas as you'll need more

just an idea.. but if u can sanitise 1l or 1.5l pet bottle exteriors to your satisfaction, you could fill a few with water and when sanitised drop into the pb to take up extra volume, u will need to fill the bottles as empty they will collapse with extra pressure.. each one inserted will mean less co2 needed either by injection or yeast generated by priming.

oh yes u will need a wider necked pb..
as i say just an idea not something i have tried..
ist update for months n months..
