Fosters / Carling Recipes ?
Fosters / Carling Recipes ?
Hi everyone I'm looking for Recipes for a Fosters and Carling type brew for kegging, seen a few American versions but looking for something where i can source the ingredients in the uk ? I have to say i am a total newbie doing it from scratch, but been buying the just add water sugar kits for years and i would like to try and make my own from scratch. I'm not into the hoppy tasting brews but we do love the fosters and carling tastes lol.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi,
I can't help with recipes for those but investigate making lager as it isn't simple if you want good results.

Re: Fosters / Carling Recipes ?
there's a recipe for Fosters lager in Dave Line's Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy.
for 25L:-
OG 1046, FG 1012
lager malt 3250g
flaked rice 500g
glucose 400g
hallertau hops 45g at 90 mins
strike temperature of mash liquor 45C then mash at 55C for 30 mins and then at 66C for a further 90 mins
ferment with lager yeast

Mrs H's lager:
Lager Malt 2816g
British Caramalt 402g
Flaked Maize 402g
Brewing Sugar 402g
Saaz Hops 20 Bittering units, added at start of the boil.
Estimated OG 1042
I normally use Saflager s-23 or brupaks lager yeast in that brew & both give good results if fermented around 14c-16c.

Re: Fosters / Carling Recipes ?
Both those recipes would be perfect. As already eluded to, the absolute most important requirements here are temperature controlled fermentation, great big healthy yeast pitch (at least a couple packs if you're using dried yeast), and very lengthy cold-conditioning. Though they're not the most complex or intense tasting, pale lagers are among the hardest beers to brew well.
Best of luck!

Re: Fosters / Carling Recipes ?
you certainly don't need much else but lager/pilsner malt, a bittering hop, probably sugar/corn/rice etc and a lager yeast. it then needs to be kept at low temp after fermentation for at least a month to eradicate the off flavours.
I take it you've researched the equipment you will need for all grain brewing too. If you don't want to buy kit, you could probably brew an extract version with extra light dme and a 10 litre stockpot.
one more thing - you won't get high carbonation in a keg, just regular. if you want a lot of fizz, better off bottling.

Yes you're right, but taste education required I think

True. No matter what, his brew will taste better than the commercial comparison!far9410 wrote:Yes you're right, but taste education required I think
