Has any1 used radiator reflective foil on a brew pot?

going to put some on mine when i get chance to help keep mash temps. Does this wrk well?

i take it the shinny foil side will face towards the pot

Radiator foil on it's own will help a little, but I'd suggest using a couple of thicknesses of foam camping mats or something similar underneath. I'd put the shiny side of the foil on the outside otherwise, if you're as clumsy as I am, spills mean you'll end up with something very difficult to clean. On my kettle, I used 50mm Celotex insulation sheet, cut into vertical strips to go around the circumference, with radiator foil (shiny side out) around the whole thing and aluminium tape to seal the gaps. It's barely warmer than room temp when boiling, so it must be doing the job. Pay particular attention to insulating the top though. If anywhere is warmer than room temp, you're losing heat.

Cheers dloper.

just wrapped 2 layers around pot but av put the shinny side towards the pot.2 early lol.

Think i have a space blanket kicking around somewhere so that will go on aswell and the lid is insulated aswell.

all should help getting to a boil as i brew outside on eletric

you need to make you insulation removable so as to cool your brew
with insulation it takes a lot longer to cool to pitching temperature unless using plate chiller

Hi Dave, This is how I did my 100L boiler and I used a space blanket for the inside of the insulation, mind it was a bit fiddly sticking the space blanket to the double sided tape

I wouldn't bother with the boiler as noby points out the cooling cycle takes much longer with permanent lagging, but a removable version maximises economy.

To be effective reflective materials need a air gap. As they do behind radiators. They won't reflect if they are in contact with something! That's why foil insulations have air filled wadding between layers.

The sfuff i have used is like bubble wrap with foil over it. Filled with water and switched element on earlier warms up alot faster

I bought a cheap as chips foiled covered camping mat on Ebay (item no 201138049715). Best of both. Foil on the outside for an air-gap and nice thick foam (1cm) as well. Velcro'd straps glued on allow quick removal for cooling and cleaning.
