landman wireless bbq thermometer @£7.50

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H ... E_AMZLdp_1

saw this and took a punt..

it arrived today, needs 4 x aaa batteries 2x for the display and 2 x for the rf base unit

a quick test reveals its OKish....

dropped in water out of the tap next to a thermopen which settled on a reading of 8.5C within a few seconds the landman took over 35 Mississippies to hit a stable 9C so far so good..

next i made a cup of tea and dropped the 2 probes in while it brews, the thermopen read 96C and started to drop by .1 of a degree every other second or so by the time the landman was showing 95C the thermopen had dropped to 93C and as the temperature drops in the mug the landman seems to lag 1.5-2C behind the thermopens readings.. currently 79C on the landman and 77.4 on the thermopen....

So my Very scientific testing ;) reveals its an ok ish thermometer the wifi range isnt great but gives u a few m of unteathered freedom. might be ok to monitor the mash temp but the probe needs to be plugged into the base box containing batteries,,

And out of the box the BBQ meat cooking functions are a bit of a pita and tricky to aoid so it will beep at you to tell you your beef is cooked or has gone over temp.. ,,

IMHO if tempted and do lots of BBqing it may be worth a punt, for a brewday thermometer its features are not applicable and its not that hot.. long reading lag, not that accurate at higher temps, best feature is the button to light up the lcd dispaly ;)

I've found mine pretty spot on compared to my normal thermometer, and I can go anywhere in my house and still pickup the wireless signal. I think it's great for keeping an eye on things coming up to temperature while I'm off working in another room. I keep it dangling in the water all the time in the boiler, which is fine for BIAB, but it will be all but useless for monitoring mash temps in my mashtun, although I'm pretty confident it'll maintain a stable temperature anyway, so not too fussed :)

For the cash I'd recommend it to anyone - I even bought a spare :)

At the point of adding milk in my tea, the termopen needed resetting (timed out) and read 57.6C
the landman was at 59C.. lovely brew too ;)

Perhaps the thermopens accuracy and response time has spoilt me GD ;) And i was a bit harsh, But it seems slower to respond than an rtd or ntc device even ? the inclusion of an individually signed R&TTE Declaration of Conformity with the landman may have raised my accuracy expectations? Not that i have any idea what a R&TTE DoC is ;) HA google has just told me its a wifi standard ;) dum dum dum dum..

And for monitoring the heat up at a distance it would indeed be great, but for checking the mash temp at dough in i will stick to the thermopen ;).
aye when i said a few meters, read all over the house.. i did get a wifi glitch in the living room next to the kitchen but on/off sorted that ;)

I am overdue a probe callibration session i will include the landman when i get round to it.

Yeah, guess it's about expectations - I don't need it to be mega accurate (although I could calibrate it I guess, if it was linear), and lag time of a few seconds is neither here nor there for me, but it does mean I can beggar off and do other things while keeping an eye on temps, and that's invaluable for me.. well, worth £7.50 anyway :)
