Is Copper the new or old "shiny"?

Post by vacant » Sun Feb 08, 2015 4:54 pm

I was casually looking at pots for fudge making and came across this copper stock pot. Too small for brewing but I thought how gorgeous three 50 litre pots would look as my brewery.

I shall dream on. Apart from cutting open hot water cylinders, is anyone brewing in copper?

True. Add a bit of skill and flare, you'd have a real work of art.

True - probably be easier to passivate it by PTFE coating the internals of the churn rather than trying to desolder/resolder things. Also at £150 starting - you're talking about most of the cost of a 50l bergland pot and 30l insulated tun pot

Just get some autosol and polish up the stainless gear and make it super shiny shiny :) not sure I would use it on the inside of the boiler though....

At one time I considered making a conical by soldering copper sheet. Unfortunately though, copper is expensive and (I found with my copper HLT) it doesn't stay shiny long, quickly goes a dull rusty colour and then has tendencies towards verdigris if kept out in the garage, which I believe is poisonous. You can keep ahead of it, but combined with limitations on what cleaners/sanitisers can be used with copper, then for me cheaper stainless or polypropylene are probably better bets.

Cheers
