Pump bypass loop help

Post by Coffeeuk » Wed Oct 14, 2015 8:27 pm

Hi,

I'm looking for advise restricting the flow through my pump when recirculating through the rims. The pump is a Stuart turner RG550-2 Which is not magnetically coupled and needs a bypass loop to restrict the flow.

Looking at the picture below, is this the right setup on the left hand side for a bypass loop( ignore the right hand side )

Thanks

Mick

Ever thought about just slowing it down with a controller?

Apparently it's not a good idea, but I'm happy to be convinced otherwise

Maybe best to put a tee in output of pump
One leg of this you use as output
The other leg put a tap on and return its output to the tank you are pumping from

This would allow pump to output full power unrestricted but would bleed off some of the pressure

I'm lead to believe the pump needs to spin at full speed in order for the cooling fan to do its job properly, but like I say, I'm happy to be convinced otherwise.

That's true, but only if they're under large loads at greatly reduced speeds.

I'll trial my chugger on Friday for 1 hour at half speed, take some temps and report back. I need to confirm this for myself as I'm building a panel at the moment.

Didn't get time to do this but I'll get around to it this week.
