6 litre thermo pot herms

Hi guys. I have a 6 litre thermo pot from Bergland that I'm planning on converting to a little herms pot.

I've seen people use elements that are fitted in the bottom section of these pots bit I'm insure where people get these specific elements from? What size do they have to be? I would ideally like to fit one in the bottom and have the cable feeding through to the outer bottom rim so I can fit a gland to it and wire on a plug to end of the lead.

I don't have a HERMES, but those I've seen seem to use a vertical pig tail element. Where you would get one from I'm not sure. Hopefully those that have made one will jump in.

3kw maybe an inch off the bottom of the pot, from Amazon just over a tenner if memory serves, they were so cheap I bought 2 and after 30+ herms brews still haven't had to use it, coil came from mr lard.

Does anyone know what size hole I would need to drill in the outer skin of the thermopot underside in order to fit a burco element in the base? I gather the inner hole for the element itself to fit through is 40mm. I only have a 51mm holesaw for the outer skin. Would this be wide enough to get the nut onto the back of the element to secure it?

I can't remember if it was a 51 or a 64mm one I used . . . although I was putting a swan element in the base rather than a Burco and that has 6 6mm holes to fasten it down rather than a big nut.

Cheers Aleman. I'm torn between going for the burco one with the large nut or the cheaper unbranded stainless one as further up in this post.

You'd need to ask him current pricing I got it a year ago.
I control with sestos pid to 0.1 and can change 15l mash by 1 degree in 50secs using a Chugger, great for step or mashing out
Reading here over the years much better to have an element with more "juice" to allow you control process.

Why not get a cheap Tesco kettle and strip the element out of it or better still why noit use the kettle. get a copper coil fitted inside it and run it off a PID controller

Hi mate, as it happens I already use exactly this for my current herms setup. But I bought the 6 litre thermo pot with my last order from Bergland as I was ordering my mash tun. Worked out very cheap so I couldn't resist!

Nothing wrong with the kettle herms tho. I think they work brilliantly! The lure of the shiny is just too much!

and a smaller 38mm hole is needed to fit, also with just about 1m of element length they are virtually a LWD option too

Thanks for that fil, very useful. Does this element need a wider hole on the underneath of a thermo pot for securing?

I used a burco element in mine. It's a tight fit and the holes need to be off-centre as the element is asymmetric. IIRC I used a 64mm hole saw.

Is this 40mm hole on the inside and 64mm on the outside skin? I only have a 51mm cutter for the outside

Sorry, I can't remember the inside hole diameter. I think you'd struggle with a 51mm outer hole, you've got to get a good grip on the locknut. I'd suggest looking at one of the more compact elements posted above.
