My £7 Ikea thermometer has just decided it is 48°c in the garage, so needless to say, it is in the bin. Just bought one of the above....

Wow. Is that a speed gun? Yep had loads of issues with thermometers. Binned loads ,all different ,even 2 of the same. Got a 20quid job at the mo, seem's o.k.Still want a couple of drop in the water trub ones that are reliable thou ,as the two i've got now, one says 20c , the other 48c

Think someone on one of the forums said the problem was it will only measure the temperature on the outside of the vessel, or if you point it straight at the grain it will be the surface temperature.

It won't be the only one I will be using, still have a probe thermometer. Will be interesting to see how it works on flowing liquid - my last 'drop kick' thermometer was for measuring wort into fv for pitching purposes. As for surface temp, I stir my strike water to make sure the temp is even throughout, so again, should be ok for that. Time will tell....

Be aware they're quick but fairly inaccurate! Yes it'll measure the boiling point of iron but measuring mash to 0.5 degrees accuracy? Nah......

I've had the same three quid glass/spirit thermometer for years (famous last words) and it's never let me down. These digital things seem to misfire a lot?

fwiw i have a couple of the cheap ebay pen type thermometers while the display is small and hard to see in dim light and they are not fast to centre on a reading they read within 1C of the eti thermapen i also use.. so not bad for the price..

Yeah I have two of those fleabay ones too, they read within 0.4 of a degree difference between them and 4 degrees out when checked in ice water and steam from a kettle, that link is cheaper by a quid than when I bought mine too.

Probably from me. There are cheap ones about and they perform accordingly. I bought one for checking yeast temp in a glass flask before pitching in an effort to avoid contamination via a probe. I have used numerous thermometers from glass to digital. I have had only one worthy of using and that is a Thermapen, fast accurate and robust, £ for £ it is a no brainer.
