Hi guys
I'm after some help please, its been a while since my last brew, which went wrong and knocked my confidence a little, but I've got a spare few days and I've got the brew bug back and hopefully get a nice batch ready for summer.
I only have a 20l pot and was wondering if anyone could send over a recipe for a single hop, pretty simple brew to get me back on the horse ?
Cheers

Re: BIAB 20l Pot
Hi Coldfish
This was my 1st BIAB brew taken from a brewing book my daughter got me from a home brew shop in Brokklyn New York - their web site is http://www.brooklynbrewshop.com
They cater for 1 gallon brews which isn't very cost effective. As this was my 1st brew I kept the quantities down aiming for 9 litres to bottle. I did re-calculate everything from US measure to metric and just multiplied up. This is the recipe I started with (copied out of Beer Engine so formatting might look a bit dodgey):
Brooklyn IPA
Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 5 lbs. 8.1 oz 2500 grams 80%
Munich Malt 20 EBC 0 lbs. 4.4 oz 125 grams 4%
Caramalt 30 EBC 1 lbs. 1.6 oz 500 grams 16%
Hop Variety Type Alpha Time lb: oz grams Ratio
Columbus Whole 15 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.4 oz 10 grams 25%
Cascade Whole 5.7 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 1.1 oz 30 grams 75%
Final Volume: 9 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.076
Final Gravity: 1.019
Alcohol Content: 7.6% ABV
Total Liquor: 16 Litres
Mash Liquor: 7.8 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 69.7031610932822 EBU
Colour: 25 EBC

It was great compared to my kit efforts (haven't done a kit since) but each brew since has been a further improvement.
Hope this helps

Re: BIAB 20l Pot
If you take pretty much any recipe and take the values for a 23L batch, divide the grain and hop amounts by 23 and then multiply the result by 19 you have the amounts you require for a 19 L batch of beer. This should fit nicely into your 20L boiler. All boilers should show a max fill line on them, this will equate to the 20L as you will see there is sufficient free space above that mark to allow you to boil vigorously. This does not mean you can set it boiling then walk away, you will have to keep an eye on it. If you have or get a copy of Graham Wheelers book Brew your own British Real Ale (BYOBRA) you will find that he has his recipe's arranged for 19/23/25L batches.

Re: BIAB 20l Pot
A 19l batch seems a lot to me for a 20l pot??? With mashing grains displacing a chunk of water plus your hot break too. I use a similar sized pot and for me a 10 l batch is ideal, using about 14l of mash/boil water in total (I get a lot of evaporation)
Just this weekend I brewed the following in my 17l biab pot. It was a largely unplanned recipe made from odds & sods:
Grain:
2kg Maris otter
100g wheat malt
150g crystal
Hops:
All addictions were Cascade
15g @60min
10g @30min
20g @15min
Other:
Tsp Irish moss @15min
Yeast:
Half pack of Mangrove Jack Workhorse (chose this coz it's tolerant of warm conditions & I've no temp control)
Mash at 67 for 1 hour
Ended up with 10l into the fv with OG at 1.054
No idea how it'll turn out, but it had a decent krausen after less than 24h, so something's happening
