Thoughts on drainage

Post by StrontiumDog » Sun May 07, 2017 2:33 pm

Hi all.

I'm looking to get this 35 litre Thermo pot

http://www.angelhomebrew.co.uk/en/stock ... s-pot.html

to use at a mash tun. I'm undecided on my options for drainage as to whether I want to spend the extra ~£65 for the bottom drain conversion

http://www.angelhomebrew.co.uk/en/stock ... rsion.html

or just have a drilled hole in the side for a conventional false bottom (I believe they do that as well, I'm not very good with DIY).

I already have a FB

http://the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/acatalo ... om-10.html

so I guess my question is should I get the side drain as I can use some tube to connect the FB I already have or should I pay the extra ~£65 for the bottom drain conversion and if so, how could I connect my FB?

Have a look on brewbuilder , im sure he's cheaper. You would need a custom cut false bottom if you wanted to have a bottom drain version. I have a bottom drain 80l pot and for sheer ease of cleaning the bottom drain wins.

a bottom drain is not a very difficult diy job, the major cost items being circa £15 for a SS thru the deck fitting for the drain and a £10 20mm qmax punch to make the holes in the bottom skin and the bottom rim. while SS is a hard metal to drill the thermopot skins are uber thin and a sharp punch (nail) can easily puncture the skin in advance of drilling.

the 'tricky bit' is fettling the SS fittings so they squeeze within the base void, and a belt sander and patience are the tools used to grind down a few mm of SS off an elbow and your skin fitting, so they can sit and point thru the base rim centrally..

buying a thermopot direct from the German ebay.fr supplier is generally a fair bit cheaper than buying from a uk retailer, email for a price and pay via a paypal invoce if happy with the price delivery takes a few days. sued.bergland@msg.afterbuy.de

Just occured to me. If I had a thermometer hole in the top like this

https://powellbrewing.co.uk/product/40l ... ure-gauge/

Then in theory I could use it as a fermenter as well? For now I only intend to brew one batch at a time

Also check out BrewBuilder. https://www.brewbuilder.co.uk/mash-tun- ... p-kit.html I got my bottom drain fittings kit from there and all went together smoothly.

+1
I tried looking around online for cheaper stainless bits and pieces but couldn't do it cheaper than BrewBuilder. Still a DIY job involving an angle grinder but well worth it.
Cheers and gone,

What does everyone think of this? My FB is a bit DIY and this seems a pretty good deal
