Fermenter king gen 3?

Post by Rankin_leigh » Sun Mar 28, 2021 9:19 pm

Hi gang.

Anyone have a fermenter king gen 3 - especially the 60l version. What's your views?
I have a fermzilla and am completely f**ked off with the issues over a mix of either pressure leaks or stuck seals.

So am looking at others. My first choice had been lardy/brewbuilders conical. But on checking the measurements the legs make it about an inch or 2 too big for my unit.

Been looking at either the fermzilla's all rounder, fermenter kings snub nose or their conical.
My preference would be a conical with ability to dump trub - but don't want the same issues I had with the fermzilla.

I had an original fermenatasaurs and love it - but want something able to handle 40l finished beer.

Any thoughts?

How about these.

I have been using them for ten years with no problems.

IPA I am so pleased you said that first. I wholeheartedly agree.

I have be banging on for ages that we don't need stainless... for years in fact.

"10 years " yeah that's about the same for me, I have made 1000s of litres in HDPE with absolutely no issue.

Have you asked him about cutting one down?

@orlando. It's the width and depth of my fridge thats the issue. As his 14 gal is imperial rather than us it's just that little bit to big.
I've been upgrading my set up over the course of lockdown so now doing batches for 2 cornies.

@ipa. I've always enjoyed fermenting under pressure. And also want to be able to do pressurised transfers.

I decided to take a punt at the new fermenter king. Doesn't seem to be many reviews of it on line as it's quite new. I'll put up some sort of review after a couple of brews.

Let us know what you think about it. I have an all rounder and original Fermentasaurus but I am thinking about upgrading the later with the upgrade kit, although I have only seen it appear on a Norwegian shop in this part of the world.

So I decided to give the fermenter king 3 a go.
I got it from bottle 2 brew.
It's the 60l version so will be looking at being able to direct comparison with the larger fermzilla.

Just currently pressure testing before I give it a good clean.

First impressions are really good. Some niggles, but I would say appears to be better than fermzilla at the moment.
For some reason (it's not the sounding valve - makes no difference). It seems to want to sit wonky in the stand. Not a big deal for me as mine sits in its own shelf.
The casters on the stand are a great addition.

Playing with the plunger seal (my main hesitation when getting it) it's seems to work well with a nice tight fit.

I really like the fact that it comes with an attachment to make the dump opening into a tri clamp. What I can't understand and very annoying is that the opening is 1.5 but they increase the housing to a 2 inch Tri clamp - why not keep it at 1.5 so that all the standard homebrew tri-clamp fits!

To start with I'll be using the collection bottle. My unit seems to have lost the seal for this which sucks. But should still have one somewhere.

One of the best (and very simple) improvements is due to the plunger being in middle, they included a key ring loop that keeps the pickup line central - meaning no more sediment from the sides.

Hopefully I'll get a beer in there at the weekend...

It's rated to 2.4 bar/30 psi. I tested it up to 20psi and it was holding well.
