Just to say hi to everyone...my name is Mike and I live in Lincoln.
Have been brewing from kits for some time now. I was fortunate to have a proper hand pump given by the landlord at my local, so that has pride of place on my home bar ! I'm retired so have plenty of time to do all the things I never got round to before. I was very interested in some of the topics on this section and will no doubt be sticking my oar in shortly.

Yes....I worked in Skeg before a heart attack forced retirement. Batemans do some excellent brews..in particular their "Valiant"and the XXXB of course...lots of outlets in Skeg..........but strangely the locals used to say "ugh ! bloody batemans" I could see nothing wrong with it. I think they were all weaned on the mass production stuff which is delivered to the coast in tankers ! (i.e. Butlins.....John Smiths at about 2.5% made for Butlins under contract ! ....and £2.25 a pint in 1998.....rip off !)
I did notice that Batemans tended to vary widely in taste though, from one pub to the next....I think its dependant upon the conditions that its kept in from pub to pub. ( Thanks for the memories)

Bottles of XXXB are available in Aldi for £1.29 (compared to £1.79 at Sainsbury's). Never tried it on draught but the bottled stuff is very very nice!

My first kit was a Geordi bitter back in 1966....bottles then, and one night there was a terrific bang and the whole lot exploded ! The next effort was put into an old wooden barrel..9 gallons, again from Geordie kits...fairly successful but had to be used within about a week or it became vinegary !
I did'nt bother any more until retirement and have found the Youngs Definitive bitter to be more to my taste, tried the Tom Caxtons Yorkshire Bitter...but thats a bit too bitter for my tastes as is the Geordie.
I experimented a lot with sugar content and managed to brew one at 7.8%
These strong brews are ok but I prefer it about 5%....there's no fun in having two and falling off the stool!
I use a 5 gallon plastic barrel and a hand pump, only about 2 mtrs through to the kitchen. the problem was in keeping it cool so i took the shelves out of one of the fridges and drilled a hole for the pipe to go through ! Its nice and cool now !
