My first kit was a Geordi bitter back in 1966....bottles then, and one night there was a terrific bang and the whole lot exploded ! The next effort was put into an old wooden barrel..9 gallons, again from Geordie kits...fairly successful but had to be used within about a week or it became vinegary !
I did'nt bother any more until retirement and have found the Youngs Definitive bitter to be more to my taste, tried the Tom Caxtons Yorkshire Bitter...but thats a bit too bitter for my tastes as is the Geordie.
I experimented a lot with sugar content and managed to brew one at 7.8%
These strong brews are ok but I prefer it about 5%....there's no fun in having two and falling off the stool!
I use a 5 gallon plastic barrel and a hand pump, only about 2 mtrs through to the kitchen. the problem was in keeping it cool so i took the shelves out of one of the fridges and drilled a hole for the pipe to go through ! Its nice and cool now !
