I used Irish Moss in my last brew because the LHBS didn't have any protafloc or whirlfloc. My understanding being that they would work the same. Good point about disolving the protafloc in water first then adding to boiler, makes sense that this would help it spread through the wort easier.

Irish moss, Protofloc, granules etc = All the same. Just different name. Its all seaweed in the end.

I bought a load of Protafloc from Barley Bottom back in April, when my supply of Whirfloc dried up. They are similar to look at, with the Protafloc (shown right) being a little taller. I just bung one in for the last 10 minutes of the boil.

I just went to my LHBS in Hull and asked for protafloc or whirlfloc. I just got this blank look!
Then I asked for calcium chloride........same blank look.
Then I asked for a bung with an airlock hole in that would fit a standard milk bottle.....they knew what I meant that time.
........but they don't stock them ](*,)

Ha! You think that's bad - my LHBS can't get torrefied wheat "for love nor money". They do a nice line in cake mixes though...

I got exactly the same response when I asked for them in the Bulwell shop. Same woman has worked there at least 20 years and I often get a "don't know" when I ask a question.
you'd have thought she would have picked up some knowledge along the way...

Hmmm quite surprising when the Bulwell shop is less than a mile away from Murphys where we sell tonnes of carageenan.....rubbish!

I use the granules and have been really impressed with them. I haven't tried the tablets but the idea of having to cut them up sounds imprecise and possibly wasteful. I would certainly like to know more about why they are considered inferior as I can't see why they would contain anything different to the tablets other than what is used to combinate them.
