I got my empty cylinders on freecycle.

Just checked my local councils website they don't accept gas bottles. So free cycle it is or buying one just trying to work out propane or butane

Butane struggles in cold temperatures, so if you want to brew outdoors in cold weather I would definitely say propane is the better choice. Its not just the ambient temperature either; as you use gas the expansion causes an additional chilling effect that can frost up the cylinder in cold weather, which gets worse the more powerful your burner.

After some research I plumped for the bog standard ~13kg red propane tanks; for some reason (probably popularity) per kg its cheaper around here than 19L and not massively more expensive than the really big unwieldy cylinders. The patio gas variations also seemed more expensive than the normal type, and don't have compatible regulators.

Cheers

Yeah, the ~13kg ones seem more common, though exact capacities can vary between brand.

BTW, I seem to remember (though perhaps incorrectly) that some ~18L-19L cylinders have a special fitting- for forklift trucks etc - if you do find any on ebay/freecycle/etc could be worth making sure they're normal ones.

In addition to freecycle, try car boot sales. Calor dealers will let you change between cylinder sizes, subject to certain (daft and illogical) conditions. Check the Calor website.

My FloGas experiences have always been a comedy of error and/or fibs. I acquired a FloGas cylinder with a boat and various different dealers seem to specialise in being unhelpful. Maybe I'm just unlucky...

Yep kev the black collared 18kg red propane are for flt but I did wonder what the differance was

Boingy have you tried the website they deliver to me for 3.50 might be easier dealing with the main company than a licensed dealer
