Question about bottling

Post by youngbrewer » Wed Sep 17, 2008 7:53 pm

hiya all

in crown caps post about bottling he does this

A good squirt of CO2 goes into the bucket from soda stream bottle with an S30 adapter. A fork helps to press the 'nipple' to release the gas. This should help to avoid the beer coming into contact with too much air.

Is it a soda stream bottle he has and can any one explain what a S30 adapter is

cheers

Hi Young Brewer

Yes it probably is a Soda Stream bottle that Crown cap is using with a S30 adaptor.
A s30 adaptor is a device that adapts SodaStream CO2 cylinders for use with the standard S30 injector valve fitted to barrels such as King Kegs.

Scroll down till you see the brass thing that is an S30 adaptor. It screws on the end of the Soda Stream gas bottles and you just push down on to the top of your standard S30 barrel valve and viola it gases your keg up.

I wouldn't bother getting one just for the sake of squirting a bit of gas in a bucket. You won't mess up by not squirting gas into a bucket. (overkill in my opinion)
Just keep your syphon pipe on the bottom of the bucket/bottle that you are filling. In other words fill from the bottom.

It's easy to keep buying things that you don't really need, if I was you i'd spend the money on another kit, or some kit enhancer or even another fermenting bucket which i'm sure you will find to be more usefull in the long run.

Remember you can't drink Soda Stream gas. Well I dont think you can, but even if you can i'd rather be drinking beer.

Ah, a post from back in the days when I was young and naive

Yes, the links are the s30 adaptor I used. At the time I was using that to inject straight into my King Kegs. I have since upgraded to the Widget World control handle and universal key adaptor set-up. Still use the sodastream gas though (virtually identical thread to Widgets gas bottles), I can easily get it locally and I don't use enough gas to warrant a full on regulator/pub gas set-up.

As for the squirt in the bucket. Well I don't bother any more and haven't had any problems. When I started I was paranoid about everything from sanitation to oxidisation and from temperatures to timings. These days I'm a bit more relaxed about it all, and still making good beer. That said, a little squirt of CO2 won't do any harm
Next Up : Something for the summer
Primary : Nothing
Secondary / Conditioning : Nothing
Drinking : Mosaic IPA

...and by way of a bit of a follow up to the original post, I still do everything else in that post when bottling (even the torch thing if I'm struggling to see when the beer is reaching the top of the glass).

The bottle tree is invaluable. The bottling stick means I never spill (or waste!) a drop. Have upgraded to a bench capper though when the other one gave up the ghost.

Happy bottling!
