Grain storage times

Post by MARMITE » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:52 am

I am just reading 'The Historical Companion to Housebrewing' by Clive La Pensee. In chapter 5, Theory of Malting, he says 'provided the malt is correcty stored, it will last indefinitely, unlike barley which does go off'. Does anybody know of any research into this subject or have any experiences to relate.

my last brew, a lager, used crushed lager malt that had been lying around in a sack in the garage for over 8 months due to a hiatus in my brewing schedule.

I have used old malt before and had no problems with it. Uncrushed supposedly lasts even longer, but then you have to crush it yourself. Something I'm not willing to do at the moment.
