Summer Lightening I did a bit of a boo

Post by fractureman » Tue Mar 09, 2010 3:52 pm

Well reading about people doing summer lightening I thought I would give it a go. Got all the ingredients & started about 3pm yesterday. However I made a bit of a silly mistake. In stead of 46g of Challenger hops at start of boil I put 46g of Goldings in. Note to self double read & check before you tart with ingredients.
Do you think I will have messed the brew up at all by doing this.
To provide a comparison I have brewed the reciepe again this morning using the correct hops at start of boil this time & only Goldings at 10 mins & end of boil. This way I can taste the difference between the 2.
Yesterdays 1 doesn't have a yeast head on yet but am sure the nottigham will kick in soon, today I used SO4 yeast so might not be a trye comparison of the 2 beers.
keg 1 : (Drinking) : Amarillo extract brew
keg 2 : (Conditioning) : Summer Ale extract
keg 3 : (Conditioning) : Lightening extract Goldings only
keg 4 : (Conditioning) : Lightening etxract

FV1 : FV2 :
Bottled: Brewferm Diabolo, Brewferm frambois
next up: coppers stout:)

You haven't messed up the brew. You'll just end up with a slightly different one. Goldings typically have a lower alpha acid level than Challenger which means that you get less bitterness for a given quantity. So your beer will be less bitter than intended but should still be bitter enough. The hop flavour will be different but lots of the flavour and aroma comes from the late additions and I'm assuming you used Goldings for that in both batches. It will be very educational to compare your two brews when they are ready!

Thanks didn;t think it was gonna turn out too bad. Correct Goldings hops were used in correct quantites in both brews. Will certainly be an education to taste when they are kegged & ready :)

Look on the bright side, you've got another brew in the day after! :D

It may not have the same bitterness characteristics but you'll have two great brews!

You may well find you prefer the Goldings version.

I've done 3 different brews using the recipe just using different hops and adjusting the alpha acids to suit. I'm quite happy with a version where I used nugget instead of challenger and styrian goldings for the goldings. It was just a chance to use up some old hop pellets I've had stored in the freezer.
