Adding blueberries to kit

Post by Dogman » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:32 pm

Hi

I intend to start a Wherry kit 2moro and add blueberries I was wondering how much too add to the Fv and whether to crush them and steep them in boiling water first.

This will be my 9th kit the previous as follows;

1) Ibrew bitter - added too much sugar so had to wait an hour once bottles were open for the beer to be flat enough to drink however it was a lovely beer.

2) Wherry - added yeast when wort was too high temp and had to re-pitch eventually got down to 1.010 after 19 days in Fv, a light florally beer.

3) Brupaks Scammondon dark - no issues a really treacly ale superb!

4) Milestone Black pearl - no issues lovely stout but not as much flavour as the scammondon.

5) Old conkerwood black ale - same as scammondon a lovely beer could not tell them apart.

6) Brewmaker Yorkshire bitter - no longer made i believe, nice beer not as much flavour as any of the above.

7) Wherry with added jar of honey and cinnamon sticks - awesome the next door neighbour has nearly cleared me out of it :(

8)Wherry with added vanilla(essence mistake learnt) and cinnamon - not good at first then calmed down to be a decent beer with the bitterness of the essence subsided.

All beers left minimum of 6 weeks to condition.

Many thanks.

I have to be honest............I can't understand why you would want to do that, but if you must, then it's advisable to boil the blueberries for 10 mins to make sure any wild yeasts have been wiped out. It's a good idea to boil anything that's going to be added to kit beers or grain/extract beers post boil, except hops as there aren't many beer loving nasties that can survive on hops.

Thanks for the above advise boiling it is then, my homebrewing is done with my friend who likes to experiment. We tried a blueberry beer last weekend from a brewery in Cheshire and it was nice after experimenting with the wherry previously it seems a good base for any experiments.

I also have bought a Coopers stout to put on immediately afterwards 'Ditch s ' style

It was good to read summaries of all of your brews.
