Prime TC with Carb drops?

Post by ianac1 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 1:05 pm

Hi guys

Got a TC made with 3 1/2L of Morrisons apple juice and 1L of high-5 (i think it was) mixed fruit juice.

I used coopers yeast to ferment (which has taken around 3 weeks!) but it's now finished, red coloured but VERY clear.

How do i prime using coopers carb drops? i usually use 1 1/2 drops in my ales but would i use the same with cider or one or two drops?

Thanks for any help.

I'm using 500ml bottles by the way.

Ive used the carb drops in TC and alcoholic lemonade, I find 2 in 500ml gives a nice fizz, one was a bit lacklustre.

what are these carb drops? ive never heard of them. sounds like a great way to make sure there is no yeast at the bottom of your bottles!

They come in a bag like a prepacked bag of boiled sweets, last packet I saw of them was orange. Most decent HBS sell them.

Just drop one/two of them in each bottle and then cap, they dissolve thus carbonating the beer/cider/whatever without needing yeast like a bottle conditioned beer does.

edit :- found some Carbonation Drops

I thought carb drops were just another form of sugar so would still need yeast.

Yep you still need yeast, you just do as you would normally except when it comes to the bottling stage use the drops instead of sugar.

I was a bit hasty and just stuck 1 in each bottle before there were any replies on here so hope it turns out OK.

That's actually my LHBS owned by the williams brothers brewery who have agreed to make me up a case of their mixed ales for the weekend :D

If you haven't tried their stuff i suggest you give it a go, they have some lovely ales.

well I apologise for duff info, I was under the impression that they didn't need yeast and simply dissolved and created CO2 somehow.

If that is the case I cannot see the point in this product at all, when you can simply add sugar, glucose or dme, the first two being a tiny fraction of the cost of a bag of these.

1 tab is said to do 750ml of liquid, 2 would be over fizzy in 500ml
