Maximising your beer for your brew!!

Post by HighHops » Thu Oct 14, 2010 9:40 pm

I've managed to blag a day off (it's my turn on the sick rota) and my wife's out of town, so I've cancelled the go-go girls and I'm gonna make me a brew tomorrow, but this will be my last chance for a couple of weeks. So I got to thinking...
I want to maximise my beer for my brew without buying bigger kit. My gear is standard homebrew size for 25L brews. I stretched this to 7 gallon a few weeks back by brewing stronger and diluting. But I'm thinking of making a really strong brew with high hops on the boil and then diluting it down in two fvs after the boil? I reckon I could mash 8Kg at a push as I've got a 20L mash tun. With a stiff mash I could get 28L on the boil and top up with the last sparge. I usually lose 7L on a 90 min boil so topping up is not an issue. Once I've diluted this down it should give me 45L at 1040 OG (2 fvs worth of wort), or I might make one brew stronger than the other like a partygyle and dry hop each brew with different hops for a bit of variety.

OK my brewhouse efficieny might be down a bit and my hop efficiency will be low so I'll have to bang the hops in, but if I can make 2 brew in one day then I'll have gained a day of my life back and still have the same amount of beer.

Is this magic on a Derren Brown scale or have I missed something major?

I can't see the problem with this. The second brew will be hard to judge in regards to hops.

My idea would be to take a reading of the second busket before boil and then use a brewing program to make something with the same PRE boil og, then use this to work out hops.
remember to take pics and show us it too.

OK. I did it! 10 Gallon from one mash.
One mash 7.3Kg malt. My tun was full to brimming!
One boil 28L. I ended up with 26L @ 1072.
I diluted this down to 10 gallon(46L) at 1040 SG in two fv's.

The recipe was based on London pride, with Challenger, Northdown & Golding, but with Amarillo instead of Target.
Aimed for 34 IBU - One fv pitched with recultured worthies White Shield yeast. The other pitched with Windsor.

Sorry DeeBee forgot to take any pics.
