burco problem

Post by edgearsenal » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:25 pm

Hi all I brought a 5.5 gallon burco from ebay for use as a hlt.
I filled the hlt to 12 litres and turned it on to start brewing, now thats when the problem started it got up to about 70c ish then tripped the power.
So I turned it on again, and it tripped again, tried it on another socket and tripped it again. I also tried the plug in an other socket in the off position and it tripped the power again.
The plug felt quite warm as well. when i tried the burco the next day same thing agian fine till it got up to 70c and power off again.
anybody got any idea what the problem is??

yep if thats the problem its a new elemenet, you could try bypassing the stats ect just to double check, but it does sound like the element insulation is breaking down

You mention that the plug is quite warn. Have you checked the wiring in there. There could be something loose if it`s getting warm.

Yep, check the plug (because its easy) - although you may want to treat it to a new one if the plug looks old; they do get some hammer and mine gets quite warm to the touch but not hot. Then if you know how to do it safely try bypassing the simmerstat in case its that, and if those have no effect then you probably have a duff element. If its of any use (and depending on the model) I got a replacement from here

But all that aside, if its a recent purchase of something that was supposed to be working, the first step may be to contact the seller; its sounds like its broken and potentially unsafe - I'd only tinker with or alter what they sent you if you have nothing to lose (and obviously if you know how to safely).

Cheers
