hydrometer
can i use this in a sample from the tap or do i need to put this in the fv top to get fg readings?

As long as you sanitise the hydrometer you can put it in your FV to take the reading.
I find it easier to read in the trial jar and you also get to drink the sample!

I prefer to use a sample trial jar as well, just don't put it back afterwards, drinking it teaches you quite a bit about the process of fermentation, putting it back risks infection.

conversely, I chuck a sanitised hydrometer in the FV after the krausen has dropped off. That's not really much good if you want to take readings daily, but I figure if there's a decent krausen then it's busy and I should just check back later
