Old Speckled Hen Clone...Help Please!

Post by WalesAles » Mon Apr 22, 2013 3:45 pm

Hello Everyone,
Been looking at different posts to do this brew but none tell me what kit to use as a base. Seen the EKG and Challenger hops,
do I use Spraymalt? If so, how much and which one? To cut a long story short, can one of you please give me a kit recipe for this brew? All help greatly appreciated as always.
Had my two brothers down for a taste session on Saturday, they had been to Malvern on Friday for a mini beer fest in a pub up there, they both said that my Wherry with Cascade and Willamette hops were as good as anything on offer there! Result! They also loved my Blueberry and Pomegranate TC`s at 5.4%.

Here's a website with a huge list of clone extract recipes. I can't speak to their accuracy, because I always brew from grains, but dig in! http://www.yobrew.co.uk/beer_recipes.php

He lists two Old Speckled Hen recipes:

MORLAND’S OLD SPECKLED HEN
OG: 1050
FG: 1007
ABV: 5.7%
IBU: 35
Colour: 35 EBC
Malt extract 2490
Crystal malt 590
Invert/cane sugar 690/585
Challenger (7.7%) 55 min
Goldings (5.3%) 18 15 min

MORLAND’S OLD SPECKLED HEN
OG: 1050
FG: 1009
ABV: 5.6%
IBU: 40
Malt extract 2865
Crystal malt 495
Invert/cane sugar 495/420
Challenger (7.7%) 60 min
Goldings (5.3%) 14 15 min + 4 dry hops

Hello Seymour,
Thanks for the reply. The answer to my question was staring me in the face all the time!......SYRUP!, I haven`t done this type of brewing before and I thought the quantities of extract were a bit large. Syrup in a can! How embarrassing for me! I was thinking along the lines of a Coopers Can or a Woodefordes can etc. to use as a base to start! #-o :D
